Founder of the “Festival de Química”

FDQ_NEW_LOGO The “FESTIVAL DE QUÍMICA” is a community outreach event that, through demonstrations, emphasizes the importance of chemistry in daily life. The event was initially designed, developed and implemented in Puerto Rico, since 2010 ACS adopted this model to broader its impact internationally. (Visit the official ACS page for Festival de Química.) It includes training prior to the event using the model “Train the trainers” for those who will work as volunteers, manual for volunteer, manual for outreach coordinator and flash cards for participants. Each event reaches out from 300 up to thousands children and students.
  • Ongoing event in Puerto Rico since 2005 (National Chemistry Week and Chemists Celebrate Earth Day)
  • “29th Congreso Latinoamericano de Química (CLAQ 2010)”, Cartagena, Colombia, September , 2010
  • “IUPAC World Congress”, San Juan, Puerto Rico, July, 2011.
  • “30th Congreso Latinoamericano de Química (CLAQ 2012)”, Cancún, México, October, 2012.
  • “Open House” Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá, Colombia, September, 2013.
  • “Semana Nacional de la Ciencia y la Tecnología” by CONICYT (Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología); Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Santiago, October, 2013.
  • “Open House” at the Universidad de Concepción, Concepción, Chile, October, 2013.
  • “Chinese Chemical Society Meeting”, Beijing,China, August 2014.

The American Chemical Society has an educational program, Project SEED, whose purpose is to encourage economically disadvantaged high school students to pursue career opportunities in the chemistry related sciences. The program consists of an 8-week science project, during the summer, in research laboratories at a university. The program gives the students the opportunity to experience scientific research first hand, where enthusiastic scientists individually mentor the students.

In 2011 the Project SEED was implemented in Puerto Rico at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras Campus (UPR-RP). Since then Dr. Ingrid Montes, has been the program coordinator. This program has been very successful, winning the ChemLuminary Award in 2016. Annually, around on hundred of applications are received from students interested in participating in the program.

Coordinator of ACS webinars in Spanish

“The Spanish Language Webinars Series is organized by the curation and great support of Dr. Ingrid Montes of ACS, Dr. Lena Ruiz Azuara of SQM, and Bibiana Campos Seijo de C&EN. The webinars are co-produced by the Sociedad Química de México, Chemical and Engineering News, and ACS Webinars.” – ACS.ORG — FIND CURRENT WEBINARS HERE

South East Regional Meeting General Chair

The 2009 Southeast Regional Meeting of the ACS (SERMACS 2009) was held October 21-24 at the Puerto Rico Convention Center, San Juan. Some 1,338 participants attended oral and poster technical sessions that focused on topics from across the discipline. A variety of special events were held, including plenary addresses, an exposition, luncheons, dinners and receptions, student-focused events, and the National Chemistry Week celebration, which attracted more than 500 additional participants. Feedback from attendees through a post-conference survey indicates a high level of satisfaction with the event.
